Plantation Key School Provides Eclipse Experience for Students and Families
Plantation Key School Provides Eclipse Experience for Students and FamiliesAs preparations and precautions were being made for safe eclipse observation, Plantation Key School principal, Lisa Taylor, jumped into action and came up with an excellent plan to maximize the experience for both students and families. The timing of the peak of the eclipse was challenging as it coincided with student dismissal and bus pickup.
Mrs. Taylor’s first step in her plan was to obtain solar eclipse viewing glasses for all the students. Then the plan was developed to allow for students to have the option to have an excused dismissal and be picked up at noon to view the eclipse at home with their family. Each student who opted for the excused early release was sent home with a pair of solar glasses. Students who remained at school also had appropriate eyewear for supervised and safe observation. Teachers and staff took small groups of students outside to watch different stages of the eclipse. “We had planned early to provide the glasses for our students and families”, said principal Lisa Taylor. “We wanted to make sure they were able to observe this once in a lifetime event.”
Taylor explained, “We were fortunate to have Charles Fulco fill in as a science teacher last year. His vast knowledge and enthusiasm with astronomy brought excitement to the students especially about the eclipse. He helped us obtain the glasses, and we were all able to enjoy the date with detailed knowledge of the eclipse and the necessary safety tips to enjoy this event to the fullest.”

Each incoming 5-8th grade student will be required to select and read one book from either the Florida Sunshine State book list or the Florida Teens Read book list. The student must select a book that he or she has not previously read (or taken an AR test). The Florida Sunshine State list is appropriate for readers in 6th-8th grades. The Florida Teens Read list is appropriate for teen readers only (incoming 8th grade students), as it contains books that have mature themes. For 5th grade books click on the appropriate link. Please read the book descriptions carefully to determine appropriateness for your child.
